OLD COUNTY ROAD RECONSTRUCTION

  • Project Summary:
    • Reconstruction of 1.4 miles of roadway for new aggregate and pavement section
    • Addition of drainage system with new catch basins and drainage pipes
    • Installation of 3,400 linear feet of new 8-inch sanitary line
  • Project Challenges / Innovation:
    • SGS prepared engineering reports in accordance with City of Rockland and Maine DOT guidelines for the project to include reconstruction of the roadway pavement section
    • Site work required extensive utility clearing and traffic control during the exploration
    • Geotechnical considerations included variation in existing roadway conditions for pavement thickness, gravel thickness and material type, variation in soil profile, groundwater, and undulating bedrock influencing construction for the drainage system and sanitary line
    • Explorations performed with a combination of large diameter direct push sampling for obtaining quality samples of the roadway gravel section and flexibility of direct push rod probe or solid stem auger drilling for efficient completion of ledge probes
    • Successfully provided in-house geotechnical explorations, lab testing, and consulting on the project and met the client’s timeline
